Disaster Relief

The ADF plays a vital role in supporting emergency responses and disaster recovery across Australia and throughout our region. Where civilian resources are unable to meet demand, unavailable or cannot be mobilised in time, emergency Defence Assistance to the Civil Community arrangements enable the ADF to provide assistance in emergency situations in collaboration with local authorities and regional partners.

Since 2008, the ADF has provided defence capabilities for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in Indonesia, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Haiti. In addition, the ADF regularly contributes to disaster recovery at home, including supporting recovery efforts after major  bushfires, floods and tropical cyclones.

Free and confidential VVCS services are available to current and former ADF members who have served in disaster relief operations, both in Australia and aboard.

If you are experiencing a mental health concern, such as depression, anxiety or PTSD, are struggling with anger control, unable to sleep, or are in need of support in your relationship with your partner or family, engaging with VVCS counselling or group programs can make a positive difference.
