Alcohol Misuse (Changing the Mix)

Alcohol use is an accepted and often enjoyable part of Australian culture. However, alcohol misuse is one of the leading causes of preventable death nationally. For most veterans who drink at low-risk levels, alcohol is part of the mix in a healthy lifestyle that includes good diet and regular exercise. However, for some veterans alcohol use can lead to health, mental health and relationship concerns.

The relationship between alcohol misuse and mental health concerns is complex. Alcohol misuse directly contributes to a number of mental health conditions such as alcohol dependence and alcohol related dementia. Alcohol misuse can often make it difficult to assess and treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD and usually makes the symptoms worse.
